Rubenstein Compares webOS’ Position to that of OS X’s in 2001

Former Palm boss and current HP executive Jon Rubenstein, in a letter to employees, concerning the HP TouchPad’s mediocre reviews that pointed out how sluggish the TouchPad can be at times:

It’s hard to believe these statements described MacOS X – a platform that would go on to change the landscape of Silicon Valley in ways that no one could have imagined.

The similarities to our situation are obvious, but there’s also a big difference. Like David Pogue, our audiences get that webOS has the potential for greatness. And like me, they know that your hard work and passion, and the power of HP’s commitment to webOS, will turn that potential into the real thing.

I’m not sure that this is a fair comparison to draw. WebOS has been around since 2009, and is now on killer hardware, spec wise. OS X, at the time these comments were made, was not only brand new, but was on slow hardware for the day. OS X got faster over time, but each version of webOS continues to feel sluggish.
