The 2023 Apple History Calendar →

I’ve got big news today: I am launching my second Kickstarter project!

For 2023, I’ve designed a new edition, focusing on the software that powers our favorite devices. These dates cover everything from Apple’s earliest software to the latest and greatest versions of macOS, iOS, iPadsOS and more. The calendar also includes a wide range of first-party software titles from iLife and iWork to things like Cyberdog and Rhapsody.

A New 512 Pixels T-Shirt: Local Integrated Software Architecture →

It’s been a couple of years since there’s been a 512 Pixels t-shirt, so I wanted to do something special this time. In looking through some materials, the Lisa jumped to mind, so here we are:

512 Pixels LISA shirt

According to sources there at the time, Steve Jobs insisted that the computer’s name was not in honor of his daughter, so “Local Integrated Software Architecture” was the official line. Others joked that it meant “Let’s Invent Some Acronym.”

(Obviously, the machine was named for Jobs’ daughter Lisa. He was a bit of a jerk back then.)

Regardless of its name, the LISA would be a hugely important step in the direction of the Macintosh, even if it did end up being a bit of a flop. If you want to learn a lot more about the machine, check out this column I wrote for MacStories.

As far as the shirt itself, it features a simple line drawing of the machine and includes its acronym, as you can see in the image above. At the bottom of this post is a gallery of colors the shirt is available in.

This shirt is available for sale now through May 12. I hope you enjoy it!

Relay FM for St. Jude →

I am thrilled to announce Relay FM’s annual fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!

Campaign

Treatments invented at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago, and St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.

Our oldest son is a brain cancer survivor, and is about to turn 13 years old. That’s thanks to the hard work of St. Jude.

You can donate starting today!

Over the course of the next several weeks, you’ll be hearing us (and a bunch of our friends) talking about St. Jude’s mission. Your support helps ensure that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Podcasthon

On September 17, from 12-8 PM Eastern, we’ll be hosting the 3rd Annual Podcastathon live on Twitch. We’ll be joined by some amazing guests and have some truly wacky things planned for the day. You won’t want to miss it!

Funded!

…aaaaand that’s a wrap on the campaign! It closed out at 1,164 backers and at 1015% of the original goal.

While I wait on funds to clear, I’ll be wrapping up the final touches on the calendar. I’ve got a photo or two I’m still tinkering with, and I’m having all the dates on the calendar reviewed for accuracy for a third time.

I hope to have timeline details from the printers soon, and I’ll keep everyone posted from here on out via Kickstarter.

An Update on my Apple Hardware Calendar Kickstarter →

I’ve been hard at work this week wrapping up the photography for the calendar, and I couldn’t be happier with how the photos are turning out. I do not want to spoil the images in advance, but I will share one of my favorite new shots with you today:

Flower Power

I’ve also been preparing the calendar pages themselves for a (hopefully) final round of fact-checking. I’ve been back over the dates, making some changes to what I’ve decided to highlight. To that end, I’ve tallied up how many “hardware holidays” are in the project:

  • Mac: 49
  • iPhone: 10
  • iPad: 14
  • Apple Watch: 8
  • iPod: 21
  • Other: 20

Those numbers may change a little bit as I wrap things up, but the trends and patterns that emerge when you look at so many dates in Apple’s history are fun to observe. Apple really loves fall releases, ahead of its holiday quarter, but I was surprised to see how many things they’ve announced in March over the last several years, too. A few months proved to be pretty challenging when it came to decide what to highlight.

As I write this, the project has passed 1,000 backers! There are just two days left, so if you’ve been on the fence, now is the time to pledge.

Thank you all. More soon. 🧡

One Week Left on my Calendar Kickstarter →

What an amazing three weeks! I’ve been hard at work polishing details and working on photos. I’ve also been focusing on the stickers for backers of the “Get It All” pledge level.

And they are amazing:

Stickers

The artwork is by my buddy Jelly, who also did the avatar I use on Twitter and other websites. I love the personality in the stickers, and I simply cannot pick a favorite. I can’t wait to see photos of them on other people’s laptops.

If you haven’t pledged on the campaign, you’ve got just 7 days left.

My First Kickstarter: The 2022 Apple Hardware Calendar →

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been putting together something I am really, really proud of: The 2022 Apple Hardware Calendar.

The design of the months is really what has me excited. Instead of the usual slew of holidays, this calendar marks some important dates in Apple’s hardware history:

January 2022

It is up on Kickstarter now, which is a new experience to me. A huge thanks to everyone who helped make this possible: Merri, Myke, Mark, Kathy, Federico, John, Dan and Brad.

And most of all, thank you for your support.

$456,000

Earlier today, we wrapped up Relay FM’s annual fundraiser for St. Jude. This yeah’s campaign was a massive success, raising $456,000 for the hospital. This is $141,000 more than last year, which is a mind-blowing. Thank you to everyone who donated, as well as the Relay folks who took part, and the guys at ATP and John at Daring Fireball for helping share the campaign with their audiences. I love that the wider Apple community joins us each year, and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve in 2021.
