On the Serial finale and journalism as entertainment

There’s a lot of chatter today about the end of Serial, the podcast from This American Life that has followed the story of Adnan Syed, who is in prison after being found guilty for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.

SPOILERS BELOW. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Today’s episode didn’t end the way some people wanted. Adnan is still in prison, and the world is still unsure of his guilt.

Serial ends with lots of open questions; there’s no clear next step, no immediate benefit to Adnan for taking part in the story. Serial may have unpacked his case — his very life — but it didn’t put things back together in a way that has much closure for the audience.

Podcasting is more than the microphone

There’s been a lot of talk over the last few days about podcasting and podcasting equipment.

Production and gear costs are — to a degree — a chicken-and-egg problem in podcasting. Blogging has a very low barrier to entry; podcasting’s is higher.

However, if you want to be taken seriously, it does matter — to a degree — how you sound. I don’t think Casey’s argument of “Use whatever you can, even your earbuds, if you have to. The point is what you’re saying, not how it sounds” is a good one.

Follow-up: Backwards compatibility in show notes

On episode 12 of our podcast, Federico told people to use Netscape Navigator to view the show notes.

A listener named Malik came through, sharing some screenshots of Relay.fm in the ancient browser.

This week, I got an email from a listener named Simon, who has looked at our site in several old browsers:

Update: Dr. Drang has taken this to its logical conclusion:

Spotify to add podcast support?⇢

Ingrid Lunden at TechCrunch:

Spotify’s upcoming integration with Uber — getting announced formally today — is not the only development the music streaming service has planned to grow its business. The company has plans for a podcasting service as well as an as-yet undetermined feature that is currently set up under the name “Magic.”

iTunes adding podcast support was the Big Bang for medium, and if Spotify is about to follow suit, it could be just as big of a deal.
