Apple Loses E-book Case⇢

Dan Moren, Macworld:

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote on Wednesday handed down her ruling in the case between the Department of Justice and Apple over ebook price-fixing, saying that Apple conspired with the five major publishers to raise rates. A trial on damages will be held to decide how much relief the U.S. government and a coalition of U.S. states are entitled to.

Not surprisingly, Apple says it will be appealing the ruling.

The Next Billion⇢

Matthew Panzarino:

Remember, the next billion customers that Apple has to sell to were around 6 when the iPhone was introduced. They quite literally have no idea what the world was like without it.

Now, they’re 14 or 15 or 16 and looking for something that doesn’t feel as static, as heavy, as old. iOS 7 looks absolutely fantastic when paired with the iPod touch colors already, but there are even more opportunities to make their play for the younger crowd.

Different Lives⇢

Kevin Breel, on the To Write Love on Her Arms blog:

My story is this, in four simple words: I suffer from depression. I suffer from depression. And for a long time, I think, I was living two totally different lives, where one person was always afraid of the other. I was afraid that people would see me for who I really was. That I wasn’t the perfect, popular kid in high school who everyone thought I was. That beneath my smile there was struggle, and beneath my light there was dark, and beneath my big personality just hid even bigger pain.

Apple in 2000⇢

In digging around Apple’s PR site for yesterday’s piece, I came across this article:

CUPERTINO, California—December 5, 2000—Apple® today announced that it has experienced significantly slower than expected sales during October and November, which will result in revenues and earnings for its quarter ending December 30, 2000 being substantially below expectations.

The company expects to report revenue of about $1 billion and a net loss, excluding investment gains, of between $225 and $250 million when actual results are announced on January 17, 2001.

On the Power Mac G4

At Macworld in January 1999, Apple announced the Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White).

From 1997 to 1999, Apple had been shipping a Power Macintosh with a G3, but this new, colorful machine a much more forward-thinking rig. In addition to an all-new case that was easily opened for upgrades and maintenance, the machine added USB support, dropped the floppy drive and was the first Power Macintosh to be built using the New World ROM.

Opportunity Turns 10⇢

Clara Moskowitz:

The Opportunity rover, which is still going strong on the Red Planet long after its official mission was slated to end, is journeying 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from the spot it studied for the past 22 months, on the edge of Mars’ Endeavour crater, to another area where it will begin a new phase in its research.

Sunday (July 7) marks the 10th anniversary of Opportunity’s launch from Earth with its sister rover Spirit, which shut down on Mars in 2010. The rovers lifted off in 2003, and arrived at the Red Planet in January 2004. They were originally expected to operate for three months.

Craig Brewer, on Memphis⇢

Here’s the Hustle & Flow writer and director:

There’s always been this feeling in Memphis that we’re a little bit worried about what people think about us. And even when you kind of have an attitude like, “Man, I don’t care what people think about me,” you can just smell the bullshit. They really do. They worry. Hustle & Flow got caught up in that. “What are we saying about our city?” “What are we saying about the people?” Well, first of all I’m not saying everybody is like the people in this movie, and also, what’s wrong with the people in this movie? So there’s that thing. And so, when the Grizzles and the whole “Whoop That Trick” thing happened, I think there was an attitude shift where nobody wanted to apologize for being Memphis anymore. And instead of being like, “Well, if only we could take you to a Peabody brunch you would see that we’re not rude or caustic or animals, we’re civilized,” now it’s like, “Oh, you’re saying something bad about my city, well, fuck you.”
