On Backups in 2013⇢

Federico Viticci:

However, I’m not as anxious about backups as I used to be. With the move from local storage to cloud services, I feel comfortable knowing that my documents always exist somewhere. I see this every time I set up a fresh install of OS X: my documents, passwords, and photos are in Dropbox and Evernote, my music is on Rdio, my purchased apps are on the Mac App Store, and if they’re not, I have a license saved in my Gmail account. My movies and TV shows are on Plex and iTunes in the Cloud.

Windows 8.1 to Include Option for Bypassing Metro⇢

My guess is that the Start Screen in Windows 8 becomes analogous to OS X’s Dashboard environment for most users. Of course, the fact that numerous settings can only be found and changed there, the analogy isn’t perfect in practice.

Instead of putting their foot on the gas on what the company has repeatedly said is the future, they are backing away from it.

Probably a smart move when it comes to Microsoft’s biggest customers — other companies — but not a brave one.

On Being a Mac Consultant⇢

All of Patrick Rhone’s advice on the subject is good, but this is great:

Seriously, just be up front with people and have a willingness to help them find a solution even if you don’t know it yourself right away. Sometimes, someone just needs a hand to hold to work through a problem. You should be ready to offer both of yours when needed.

Before I took my current position, I ran the service shop for an Apple-Authorized Service Provider. We did a fair amount of consulting, and the most important thing I told people was this: “I don’t know, but I know how to find out.”

White House Honors Memphis Music⇢

Barack and Michelle Obama paid tribute to Memphis soul yesterday in the latest iteration of “In Performance at the White House,” celebrating the Tennessee city that brought blacks and whites together through music despite segregation and racism in the 1960s. “These songs get us on the dance floor,” Obama said. “They get stuck in our heads. We go back over them again and again. And they’ve played an important part in our history.”

Looking Back at the Future: A Preview of the Apple Pop-Up Museum

As I walked through the glass door to be the offices behind of what used to be an Atlanta-area CompUSA store, those six familiar colors filled my vision.

The store is being temporarily brought back to life, but instead of selling all-in-one printers and CDs of cruddy PC software, it’s being used to peddle history.

Inside, I met Lonnie Mimms, the man behind the Apple Pop-Up Museum, a 6,000 square-foot display of much of the company’s history, from blue boxes to iPhones. Almost everything on display is out of his personal collection, including the giant six-color logo across from the entrance.
