Penn State Sanctioned by NCAA⇢

ESPN:

The NCAA has hit Penn State with a $60 million sanction, a four-year football postseason ban and a vacation of all wins dating to 1998, the organization said Monday morning.

The career record of Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records, the NCAA said.

Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period.

Nothing can set right the wrongs done at Penn State, but nevertheless, this is the right move by the NCAA.

Automating Markdown Links⇢

While Viticci’s method is cool, I use a much simpler one to get inline Markdown links inserted: TextExpander.

When I type ;mdl TextExpander takes the URL I’ve previously copied and does this with it:

%|

The cursor gets inserted where I can type the text that should be linked. It’s a little backwards, but I’ve learned to think about the URL first, with the text second. It’s fast, easy and works in TextExpander-equipped iOS apps, too.

Expired Assault Weapons Ban Would Have Covered Rifle Used In Colorado Shooting⇢

Zack Beauchamp:

One of the principal weapons used by James Eagan Holmes in the horrific Dark Knight Rises shooting would have been subject to a series of sharp restrictions under the now-expired federal Assault Weapons ban. The AR–15 rife carried by Holmes, a civilian semi-automatic version of the military M–16, would have been defined as a “semiautomatic assault weapon” under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. If the law was still in force, semiautomatic assault weapons would have been outright banned.

Fact-Checking ‘Breaking Bad’⇢

The Future of the iPhone 4⇢

Gruber:

The big thing to remember about the iPhone 4 is that it’s the first CDMA iPhone. No way it’s going to disappear from the lineup, because now Apple could offer a “free” iPhone on Verizon and Sprint, too.

The iPhone 4 would be one heck of a free (on contract) device.

On a related note, I’m shocked at how many people go in to AT&T and still come out with a 3GS in 2012.
