Writers I Read: Shawn Blanc

Editor’s Note: I’m not sure this guy needs much of an introduction. Hailing from the Midwest, Shawn Blanc is an independent writer, coffee nut, and soon-to-be dad. We got to hang out at Macworld 2012, and it was a blast.

Stephen: Thanks for agreeing to an interview. I know you’re a busy guy. You’ve been a full-time writer for a while now. While you’ve shared some about how the transition has been going, I’d love to hear more about how you got the point where you felt like you needed to make the jump. What led you to take such a leap of faith?

Looking at Airport Utility 6.0

Airport6

This weekend, Apple released Airport Utility 6.0 for Mac OS X Lion.

Oh, and it looks just like the utility for iOS.

After playing with it for a bit this morning, I really don’t know why Apple updated Airport Utility. The new UI isn’t consistent, and doesn’t really add that much, except for the “map” view at launch. Parts of the more standard UI have been slimmed down, but there’s not much new to use, as far as I can tell.

Supporting 512 Pixels

I’m sitting in an airport, headed back to Memphis after almost a week here on the West Coast, attending Macworld, visiting friends, writing posts and recording podcasts.

As I’ve written, the trip was incredible. I think the business connections I’ve made will reap benefits for the site and all of you handsome nerd readers.

Thankfully, a wonderful British nerd made it possible to fly around the country. I couldn’t afford the trip without Matt Alexander’s generosity.

Fun

To be fair right here at the top, I stole this idea from a talk over dinner with Shawn Blanc, Pat Dryburgh, Ben Brooks and other cool Internet guys.

To be honest right here near the top, I know I’ve written a lot about the Apple community over the last few weeks. Since the company’s earning call, many have.

With the record quarter and Macworld, it’s been a good few weeks for the nerds.

Options

MG Siegler:

The biggest mistake here is the idea that there’s something, anything Google could do in order to turn Android into a business like the ones Apple has created. There isn’t.

Reflections on Macworld

This year was my first Macworld, and to be honest, I really thought I knew what to expect. I figured there would be a big expo floor, lined with booths hawking iPhone cases that I have no interest in. I assumed I’d get to meet fellow writers, some developers and Internet heroes.

What I didn’t plan on was having an absolute blast while doing it.

The Expo

I’ve went to several sessions. I saw Merlin Mann speak with David Sparks and Brett Terpstra. I met Fletcher Penney, Mike Vardy and more. I got to hang out with developers of some of my favorite apps, and talk about what they have in the pipeline for this year.
