September 10⇢

Ina Fried at All Things D:

Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone at a special event on Sept. 10, sources told AllThingsD.

The launch comes at an important time for Apple, which continues to make a lot of money from the iPhone but has seen its global market share dip amid a growing wave of lower-cost Android devices as well as an intense battle with archrival Samsung.

Tim Cook has said this fall is going be a busy one for Apple. If this is true, we have 30 days until the madness begins.

The Newtonians⇢

Wired takes a look at the Cult of Newton.

In college, I used an upgraded MessagePad 2000 to take notes in class. I had the official hardware keyboard, and synced it all back to my PowerBook. This article makes me want to pick one up again.

John Paczkowski:

“Bob is no longer going to be on Apple’s executive team, but will remain at Apple working on special projects reporting to Tim,” company spokesman Steve Dowling told AllThingsD. He declined any further explanation, refusing to comment on the reasons behind Mansfield’s abrupt demotion or whether Apple plans to appoint a new SVP of technologies.

Mansfield, of course, came out of retirement to go back to Apple, and last fall to head up the then-new Technologies group after Forstall was canned by Tim Cook.

Apple Publishes Update on Developer Site Outage⇢

Apple:

We plan to roll out our updated systems, starting with Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, Apple Developer Forums, Bug Reporter, pre-release developer libraries, and videos first. Next, we will restore software downloads, so that the latest betas of iOS 7, Xcode 5, and OS X Mavericks will once again be available to program members. We’ll then bring the remaining systems online. To keep you up to date on our progress, we’ve created a status page to display the availability of our systems.
