Apple Executives, on the iPad

These are pulled from From Stephen’s Fry’s excellent piece for Time on the iPad and Steve Jobs.

Phil Schiller Senior Vice President Worldwide Product Marketing:

There’s a negative way of saying that, and a positive. ‘Oh, it’s just a big iPhone … boo!’ or ‘Hey, it’s like a big iPhone … cool!’ Luckily, millions of people have those, so there is an instant ease and familiarity when they first encounter the iPad. As for everything else, it’s not about the features — it’s about the experience. You just have to try it to see what I mean.

The First Tablet

Andy Ihnatko on the iPad:

Well, I’m here to tell you that in fact, we haven’t seen tablets before. And maybe the iPad is the only true tablet we’ll get in 2010. The hardware we’ve seen in years past, (and what we’re likely to see in these Android devices) are laptop computers with the keyboard section broken off. They’re not fundamentally touch-based computers, they’re the products of old thinking. When Apple looks at a fingertip, they see a warm, living thing that can feel. They don’t see a poor substitute for a mouse.

The Concept

David Pogue:

And the techies are right about another thing: the iPad is not a laptop. It’s not nearly as good for creating stuff. On the other hand, it’s infinitely more convenient for consuming it — books, music, video, photos, Web, e-mail and so on. eWorld Shut Down 14 Years Ago Today

System Folder’s Riccardo Mori:

I wasn’t an eWorld subscriber, yet I remember the phenomenon fondly. I believe it was another Apple creation with potential, but the high costs of the service (and perhaps Apple’s lack of belief, too) prevented it from really taking off. Too bad it was just discontinued without morphing it into something that could survive on the Web, Apple could have taken advantage of the faithful eWorlders’ sense of community to expand it online and pioneering today’s social networks, for instance. But I guess it was not the right timeframe for Apple, not in its best of shapes financially.

Again, I Ask, Why is Apple’s Secrecy News?

Reuters:

Apple store workers say they have yet to see or touch the iPad, even though the launch is just days away and they are being trained and encouraged to talk about Apple’s newest device with customers.

“We haven’t seen it; we never do” before a product is launched, said one employee, who asked not to be identified because workers are barred from speaking with the media. “Every store employee I know, including the managers, they haven’t seen it.”
