Vizio Caught Mining Consumers for Data⇢

Lesley Fair, writing on the Federal Trade Commission’s website:

Starting in 2014, Vizio made TVs that automatically tracked what consumers were watching and transmitted that data back to its servers. Vizio even retrofitted older models by installing its tracking software remotely. All of this, the FTC and AG allege, was done without clearly telling consumers or getting their consent.

What did Vizio know about what was going on in the privacy of consumers’ homes? On a second-by-second basis, Vizio collected a selection of pixels on the screen that it matched to a database of TV, movie, and commercial content. What’s more, Vizio identified viewing data from cable or broadband service providers, set-top boxes, streaming devices, DVD players, and over-the-air broadcasts. Add it all up and Vizio captured as many as 100 billion data points each day from millions of TVs.

Samsung Breaks Silence on Note 7 Battery Failure⇢

Ina Fried at Recode:

For those who want to get a bit nerdy, here’s what Samsung says was wrong with each battery. For the first battery, Samsung says a design flaw in the upper right corner of the battery made the electrodes prone to bend and, in some cases, led to a breakdown in the separation between positive and negative tabs, causing a short circuit.

With the second battery, which came from a separate supplier, Samsung believes there was nothing wrong with the design itself, but says a manufacturing issue led to a welding defect that prompted that battery to also shortcircuit and ignite.

App.net is Shutting Down⇢

Dalton Caldwell:

In May of 2014, App.net entered maintenance mode. At that time we made the difficult decision to put App.net into autopilot mode in an effort to preserve funds and to give it ample time to bake. Since then every dollar App.net has charged has gone towards paying for the hosting and services needed to keep the site running. Unfortunately, revenue has consistently diminished over the past 2+ years, and we have been unable to return the service to active development.

Another Approach⇢

Dr. Drang also dislikes window shadows in screenshots:

The problem arose because I was including the drop shadow in window screenshots. There are some, like Dan Benjamin, who think this is an abomination. I agree that the shadows are too big, but don’t like the “open” edges of window screenshots that don’t have the shadow.

Drang’s solution solves the main problems some people have with both sides of the com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool coin. I may poke around in this a bit.

Disable Window Shadows on macOS Screenshots

I really dislike that the shadows on macOS windows appear in screenshots. It makes the overall image larger, making the content of the window less prominent. In this example, I’ve opened a photo in Preview and made a full-window screenshot:

Shadow

For any screenshot, the shadow can be disabled by holding the option key while taking the screenshot.

Thankfully, the shadow can be excluded from screenshots for good with a quick trip to Terminal.
