Kbase Article of the Week: About the Mac OS 9 Utilities Read Me ⇢

Apple Support:

This document contains information about the utilities provided with Mac OS 9.

My favorite may be the 5xxx/6xxx Tester:

This program tests Performa and Power Macintosh 5200, 5300, 6200, and 6300 computers for a possible hardware problem. If you have a Performa or Power Macintosh 5200, 5300, 6200, or 6300 series computer, you should use the tester before installing Mac OS 9. See the document inside the Tester folder for instructions on using the tester.

Kbase Article of the Week: AppleScript to Access Aperture Library Generates an Error Under Leopard ⇢

Apple Support:

An AppleScript used to select a project in Aperture may generate the error message “Aperture got an error: Can’t get project ‘yourprojectname’ when run on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The same script runs without an error message on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

This may happen if you do not specify the library to be used in your script. This has always been the best practice, but it was not mandatory under OS X 10.4.x.

Kbase Article of the Week: Use High Power Mode on your 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max ⇢

Apple Support:

Your MacBook Pro has multiple energy modes you can switch between. By default, your Mac is set to Automatic mode to balance energy use and performance. Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life. On the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, High Power Mode allows the fans to run at higher speeds. The additional cooling capacity may allow the system to deliver higher performance in very intensive workloads.

Bonus Kbase Article of the Week: Use High-Impedance Headphones with new MacBook Pro Models ⇢

Apple Support:

The 3.5 mm headphone jack on the MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021) or MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) features DC load detection and adaptive voltage output. Your Mac can detect the impedance of the connected device and will adapt its output for low- and high-impedance headphones, as well as for line-level audio devices.

When you connect headphones with an impedance of less than 150 ohms, the headphone jack provides up to 1.25 volts RMS. For headphones with an impedance of 150 to 1k ohms, the headphone jack delivers 3 volts RMS. This may remove the need for an external headphone amplifier.

Kbase Article of the Week: iPod (with Dock Connector): About the Dock Connector Cover Plug ⇢

Apple Support:

iPod (with Dock Connector) models come with a Dock Connector cover plug.

You insert the cover plug into iPod’s Dock Connector port on the bottom of iPod. This plug protects the connector, and keeps foreign matter out of the opening.

To put iPod in its dock, or to connect the Dock Connector to FireWire cable, remove the plug. iPod will not fit into its dock when the plug is installed.

Kbase Article of the Weekend: Exposure to Vibrations, Like Those Generated by High-Powered Motorcycle Engines, Might Impact iPhone Cameras ⇢

Apple just published a new — and very specific — support article:

The OIS and closed-loop AF systems in iPhone are designed for durability. However, as is the case with many consumer electronics that include systems like OIS, long-term direct exposure to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges may degrade the performance of these systems and lead to reduced image quality for photos and videos. It is recommended to avoid exposing your iPhone to extended high-amplitude vibrations.

Every 72 hours after you start up or restart your computer, a routine maintenance task (or “cron job”) runs that can affect iDisk. Similarly, if the Backup, Library, or Software folders of your iDisk appear to be empty, download and install the Mac OS X 10.3.1 Update or later.

Kbase Article of the Week: Macintosh Portable: External Hard Drives and "Sad Mac" Errors ⇢

This week, an old Q&A-style Apple Support document:

Are there problems with connecting an external SCSI hard drive to the Macintosh Portable? I have a Macintosh Portable with an internal 40MB drive. When I tried to connect a 45MB external drive, the Macintosh Portable refused to boot. The “Sad Mac” icon came up with the error code: 0000000F 00000002.

The Macintosh Portable can access and use any external SCSI device that a Macintosh Plus can access. There may be an issue with the SCSI driver on the hard drive and compatibility with the Portable boot ROMs, but we do not have any information on this problem.
