Kbase Article of the Week: iCal: To Do Items Synced with Nokia N70 Phones Remain "Completed" ⇢

Apple Support:

Nokia N70 phones have a “Mark as not done” option for To Do items. If the “Mark as not done” phone option is used on a synced iCal To Do item whose status is “completed,” the status will not change in iCal.

Apple’s solution was … less than helpful:

Change the “completed” status of To Do items in iCal instead of on the phone.

Kbase Article of the Week: iDVD 6: Photos are Missing from iDVD Project After Upgrading ⇢

Apple Support:

After you open a project in iDVD 6 that you created in an earlier version of iDVD, an alert indicates that photos used in slideshows, backdrops, or drop zones are missing. You may be prompted to locate the missing items.

To prevent this issue from occurring, update to iDVD 6.0.4 or later.

Out of all of the iLife apps I used back in the day, I think iDVD seemed the most magical. The fact that I could burn a DVD, complete with menus, on my Mac was so, so cool.

Kbase Article of the Week: iMac & Cube G4: Restarts Instead of Shutting Down ⇢

Apple Support:

This could be caused by a USB device attached to the computer, an extension conflict, or an item in either the Startup Items or Shutdown Items folder.

Follow these steps to verify:

Disconnect all USB devices (including keyboard and mouse and any USB hubs) and power down the computer as follows:

  • iMac - use the front power on/off button to power down.
  • Power Mac Cube - hold down the power button for about 5 seconds to power down.
  • Power Mac G4 - remove the keyboard and connect a known good Apple Pro Mouse and shutdown the computer via the special menu.

If the computer shuts down without restarting, it is likely the fault of one of the USB devices. Connect each USB device one by one and repeat the shutdown process until you identify which USB device is causing the fault. After identifying the suspect USB device, contact the vendor of the USB device for further instructions on resolving the issue.

Apple Support, kinda:1

Let’s say you would like to know what week of the year a certain date falls on. FileMaker Pro and ClarisWorks both have a WeekofYear function which returns the number of weeks from January 1 based on a supplied date. If you want to calculate the number of weeks starting at a date other than January 1, as in a fiscal year beginning date, you can use the following calculation given your file contains the field ProjectDate: Week of Year (calculation, number result) = INT ((ProjectDate - Date (3,1,Year (ProjectDate)))/7)+1

Kbase Article of the Week: Newton OS: Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliance ⇢

Apple Support:

Although there currently is no official certification or industry-standard documentation process associated with Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliance, the Newton OS presents no difficulty in handling information spanning the millennium.

The Newton OS, since its introduction, has been designed to use a calculation of “minutes past midnight, January 1, 1904” or “seconds past midnight, January 1, 1993.” This calculation is used for dates prior to and after the year 2000. Therefore, dates at or beyond the 2000 mark, are simply larger numbers as a result of this calculation — and do not have the difficulty other operating systems may have when calculating dates before and after the year 2000.

Kbase Article of the Week: Data that a Legacy Contact can Access ⇢

Apple Support, on the as-of-this-writing new feature, Legacy Contacts:

The data that a Legacy Contact can access depends on what the Apple ID account holder stored in iCloud and in their iCloud Backup. For example, if they kept all of their photos on a third-party site, those photos aren’t stored with Apple and won’t be in their Apple ID data.

Adding a Legacy Contact is easy, and you should do it.

Kbase Article of the Week: How to Fix a Split Fusion Drive ⇢

Apple Support:

If your Fusion Drive appears as two drives instead of one in the Finder, it’s no longer working as a Fusion Drive. Here’s how to fix it.

Fusion Drive, a storage option on some iMac and Mac mini computers, combines a hard drive and flash storage in a single volume for improved performance and storage capacity. If your Fusion Drive appears as two drives instead of one in the Finder, it’s no longer working as a Fusion Drive. This can happen after replacing either drive of your Fusion Drive, or using software to intentionally split them into separate volumes.
