Kbase Article of the Week: MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1⇢
I had forgotten all about this:
Apple has discovered that a small percentage of flash storage drives in these MacBook Air models have an issue that may result in data loss. This update tests your drive and, in the majority of cases, installs new firmware to resolve the issue. If your drive cannot be updated, Apple will replace it, free of charge.
This firmware update is recommended for MacBook Air (mid 2012) models.
Kbase Article of the Week: Mac OS X 10.3, iDisk: Local iDisk Sync Issues, Some Folders May Appear Empty⇢
Every 72 hours after you start up or restart your computer, a routine maintenance task (or “cron job”) runs that can affect iDisk. If you have selected the “Create a local copy of your iDisk” option in .Mac preferences and cannot sync after your computer has been on for three or more days, download and install the Mac OS X 10.3.1 Update or later.
Similarly, if the Backup, Library, or Software folders of your iDisk appear to be empty, download and install the Mac OS X 10.3.1 Update or later.
Kbase Article of the Week: SimpleText: Always Downloads Chicago Font⇢
Question: When printing from SimpleText to any LaserWriter, using the LaserWriter 8.x driver, I noticed it downloads Chicago during the printing process. It does not matter what fonts are included in the document, Chicago gets downloaded every time. This occurs on any version of SimpleText or LaserWriter 8 driver I have tried.
Answer: Chicago is the font used internally by the SimpleText for the page numbers at the bottom of each page. If the Chicago font is not already present in the printer’s memory, it is downloaded to your printer with each print job.
Kbase Article of the Week: Macintosh Quadra: Support for 16-Bit Color⇢
The Quadra 700 and 900 don’t support 16-bit color (thousands of colors). This was a feature added to the Quadra 950. A different chip containing a CLUT (Color Lookup Table) that could support 16-bit color was included in the redesign of the Quadra 950.
The ability to support this many colors isn’t dependent on the size of the screen, but it influences the amount of VRAM you must have installed.
Kbase Article of the Week: About the Weather App and Icons on Your iPhone and iPod touch⇢
Learn how to use the Weather app on your iPhone to check the weather in your current location or in other cities.
With the Weather app in iOS, you can look up the weather by city name, postal or zip code, and airport code. You can also create a list of cities to track and arrange the cities in the order that you want.
The Tornado and Haze icons particularly speak to me.
Kbase Article of the Week: Liquid Damage to Mac Computers and Accessories Not Covered by Warranty⇢
Current Mac notebook computers and Apple wired and wireless keyboards (except Magic Keyboard) have Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI) to help determine if these products have been exposed to liquid.
Benefits under the manufacturer’s warranty are in addition to rights provided by consumer law. You can learn more at Apple Products and Consumer Law Rights.
Kbase Article of the Week: FileMaker Pro Server: Uses TCPIP Port Number 5003⇢
Apple Support with a question and answer for the ages:
We have just set up a firewall on our network. Now I can’t access our Filemaker Pro Server over TCP/IP. In order to gain access to the server over TCP/IP, our network administrator needs to know what “port” the Filemaker Pro Server uses. Can you tell me what TCP/IP port number is used by the FileMaker Pro Server?
The Filemaker Pro Server, uses the TCP/IP port number of 5003.
Kbase Article of the Week: iPhone XR - Technical Specifications⇢
I find it funny when this sort of language is found on a specs page:
The iPhone XR display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 6.06 inches diagonally (actual viewable area is less).

Kbase Article of the Week: Mac mini: How to Remove or Install Memory⇢
The “Late 2014” part of this document is the saddest bit:
Mac mini (Late 2014) does not have user-installable RAM. You can configure the memory in your Mac mini (Late 2014) when you purchase it.
Here’s what it says for the 2018 machine:
To upgrade the memory in your Mac mini (2018), go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Kbase Article of the Week: ClarisWorks: Week of Year Based on Fiscal Year⇢
Let’s say you would like to know what week of the year a certain date falls on. FileMaker Pro and ClarisWorks both have a WeekofYear function which returns the number of weeks from January 1 based on a supplied date. If you want to calculate the number of weeks starting at a date other than January 1, as in a fiscal year beginning date, you can use the following calculation given your file contains the field ProjectDate:
