Canon Launches EOS R Mirrorless System ⇢

It’s mirrorless. It’s full frame. It has a new mount, of course. The RF mount is Canon’s latest, and its engineers have created a versatile design with a 20mm flange distance and 54mm inner diameter, both of which will lead to more advanced optics and some brilliant new lenses.

If I were still living the Canon life, this would be a great upgrade from something like the 70D that I used to carry, but I’m really happy with my Sony a7R II. Sony is simply killing it in this space, and even with the EOS R, Canon has some catching up to do.

Austin Mann Takes the iPhone X to Guatemala ⇢

Austin Mann:

I really like the iPhone X - it’s fresh, it’s fast, it’s beautiful and it’s really fun to shoot with. I’m still adapting to its new interface but the size is right, screen is great for sharing photos on and the improvements on the telephoto lens make it a no-brainer.

For me, I think it’s safe to say this upgrade to iPhone X is most exciting phone upgrade I’ve experienced since switching from my Blackberry 7230 to the original iPhone in 2007.

Photo Gear Killed During the Solar Eclipse ⇢

But with such excitement, came a treasure trove of warnings. Warnings that this event can easily damage your camera, your lens, and your eyes if you do not have the proper protection. With all of our rentals leading up to this event, we warned everyone to view the event with appropriate eyewear and to attach a solar filter to the end of their lenses to protect the lens elements and camera sensor.

Thinking About Shared iCloud Photo Libraries

I had a very rocky experience with iCloud Photo Library in late 2015:

I imported my photos and uploaded my 70GB photo library to iCloud. Everything went very smoothly, so I turned on iCloud Photo Library on my iPad.

Aaaaaand it all exploded.

Apple Support eventually got me up and running, but it took a while for me to fully trust the system.

The reality is that iCloud Photo Library is pretty great when everything is working smoothly.1 Photos show up on my devices quickly, regardless if I snapped them with my iPhone or imported them from an SD card on my iMac.

The landscape for smartphone photography has changed dramatically since we launched the original Glif in 2010. With each successive smartphone, the camera is getting more and more incredible. The smartphone has become a legitimate tool, for photographers, filmmakers, and mobile journalists. So our goal is simple: to create the best tripod mount for smartphones, period. Mercury’s transit underway ⇢

Today, the inner-most planet of our Solar System is making a transit across the sun. http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/satellites-to-see-mercury-enter-spotlight-on-may-9 The small planet cross the front of the sun (from our viewpoint) a dozen or some times a century, and it really is a thing of beauty.
