Report: New iMac Coming ⇢

Sonny Dickson, with some fun iMac news:

New iMac incoming at WWDC. iPad Pro design language, with Pro Display like bezels. T2 chip, AMD Navi GPU, and no more fusion drive

— Sonny Dickson (@SonnyDickson) June 9, 2020

The current iMac design was unveiled way back in 2012, and while I still think the all-in-design is great for a lot of users, there’s no doubt that it could use a refresh. Adapting the Pro Display XDR’s design to the iMac would be sweet.1

However, the inside of the iMac also is need in an overhaul. The iMac is the only shipping Mac without the T2 security chip, and the only one that ships with spinning hard drives. It’ll be nice to see the iMac modernized.

How this works with today’s report in Bloomberg that the ARM Mac transition is going to be announced at WWDC. I would be really surprised if any ARM Macs ship this summer, but why wouldn’t they want to usher in a new design with the new chipset? When Apple switched to Intel, most of the new Macs looked like their outgoing PowerPC siblings,2 but that doesn’t have to the be the case this time.

  1. Just as sweet? A new external 5K display… ↩︎

  2. Other than the MacBook, which replaced the 12- and 14-inch iBook G4. ↩︎

  • iPad models with Face ID: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
  • iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold both the Top (or Side) button and the Volume Down buttons until you see the Apple logo.

Some iPhone Users Seeing Green Tinting on Displays ⇢

Juli Cover, MacRumors:

Some iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max owners have been noticing an unusual green tint to their iPhone displays when first unlocking the device, based on complaints shared on Reddit and the MacRumors forums.

It’s not clear what’s going on, but almost all of the affected users say that the green tint is visible just for a few seconds after unlocking an iPhone . Some users have seen it at night with Dark Mode and Night Shift enabled, while others say it occurs when brightness is at the lowest possible setting.

I’ve been seeing this on my 11 Pro for weeks, and we’ve been talking about it on Connected. It’s a super weird bug that 13.5 did not clear up.

Trump Campaign Removes Video Featuring NASA Astronauts and Families ⇢

Marcia Smith at Space Policy Online:

The Trump Campaign took down an ad today that included footage from the launch of Crew Dragon on Saturday and touting what it claimed was the President’s role in the program. It included video of the two NASA astronauts, both civil servants, as well as their wives and young children waving goodbye. One of the spouses, a former NASA astronaut, strongly objected to use of the video of her and her son for “political propaganda.”

She goes on:

NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken were aboard and they now are on the International Space Station. Both are married to astronauts. Behnken’s wife, Megan McArthur, is still in the astronaut corps and thus a civil servant like her husband. Hurley’s wife, former astronaut Karen Nyberg, retired from NASA in March.

The Hatch Act prohibits civil servants from taking part in partisan political activities while on duty.

I saw the video when it went up, and I’m glad it’s been taken down.
