Apple Posts macOS High Sierra 10.13.2

The update’s release notes indicate that this version:

  • Improves compatibility with certain third-party USB audio devices
  • Improves VoiceOver navigation when viewing PDF documents in Preview
  • Improves compatibility of Braille displays with Mail

It can downloaded now via the Mac App Store, and should be available as a standalone installer soon.

Amazon Prime Video Ships for Apple TV

Months after it was initially announced, the Amazon Prime Video is now available for the Apple TV.

The app comes with many of the features of the iOS version, including X-Ray, which provides additional information on actors and trivia based on scenes. Watch lists created on other versions of the app sync to the Apple TV one, and content within Amazon’s ecosystem is exposed to tvOS’ universal search.

There’s no word if this means Amazon will be selling the Apple TV on its store again, but this news comes as the rift between Google and Amazon grows. Amazon seems to love getting into fights with competitors.

Update: As Casey Liss pointed out, the app has launched in conjunction with the second season of The Grand Tour, the show that rose from the ashes of Top Gear. Season 1 of the new show was used to launch Amazon Prime Video in many more countries. I have no idea if there’s more than “just politics” behind this app taking so long to make it out, but I bet once Fall 2017 was on the table, the launch was set to coincide with The Grand Tour.

MarsEdit 4 Launches ⇢

I use Daniel Jalkut’s MarsEdit everyday to publish articles, update pages and fix typos here on 512 Pixels. It’s the best WordPress client I’ve ever used, including the WordPress web dashboard.

Version 4 comes with an updated design that looks much more at home in our post-Yosemite world. WordPress users can now set the featured image for posts, set the Post Format and change the author of published posts. The app can now download the entire history of published posts and pages locally and preview Markdown, MultiMarkdown and “Convert Line Breaks” content before publishing.

The app can be used as a 14 day trial period and requires macOS Sierra. A full license will run you $49.95, with a $24.95 upgrade available to MarsEdit 3 owners, even those who purchased on the Mac App Store, thanks to a new in-app purchase in version 3.

Kbase Article of the Week: Mac OS X v10.6, 10.6.1: Active Directory User May Not be Able to Log In ⇢

Even our beloved Snow Leopard had issues:

An Active Directory user may not be able to log in to Mac OS X v10.6.0 or Mac OS X v10.6.1 client. This can happen when the Active Directory connector in Directory Utility is configured to “Create mobile account at login,” and a Home folder is specified in Active Directory for the user.

The fix? Waiting around for Mac OS X 10.6.2.

RSS Sponsor: Balance Open ⇢

You’ve probably heard of Bitcoin, one of the earliest crypto-currencies, but there are others like Ethereum. Balance connects to the most popular crypto-currency exchanges like Coinbase along with traditional financial institutions bridging the gap between the old financial world and the new one.

If you’re not familiar with this stuff, that’s okay…

Balance want to help teach you about crypto currencies, and the macOS and iOS apps they are building will serve as a wallet for all the world’s currencies.

Balance is ready for the future. The current financial system is based on outdated, legacy software. Blockchains are the bedrock of a more secure and open system based on cryptocurrencies, but not many people are using them yet. Balance is poised to change that by becoming a single destination for traditional financial accounts and crypto-currency exchanges.

Elon Musk Discusses Sending His Tesla to Mars Orbit

Last night on Twitter, SpaceX boss Elon Musk tweeted about the upcoming debut launch of the company’s Falcon Heavy vehicle:

Falcon Heavy to launch next month from Apollo 11 pad at the Cape. Will have double thrust of next largest rocket. Guaranteed to be exciting, one way or another.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 2, 2017

The Falcon Heavy will be the world’s most powerful operational rocket when it finally launches, with the ability to lift 54 metric tons. That’s still shy of NASA’s retired Saturn V rocket that took men to the moon, but it is twice the horsepower of the Delta IV Heavy, the current record holder. The rocket is constructed from three of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets being strapped together.

It will be rated for both cargo and crew, and according to SpaceX, will be in service for both lunar and Mars missions in the future.

The vehicle’s initial launch has been delayed several times, but it looks like its time may finally have come. The test payload, however, has not been discussed until now:

Payload will be my midnight cherry Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity. Destination is Mars orbit. Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn’t blow up on ascent.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 2, 2017

There’s mixed reporting on whether the payload tweet was a joke or not. I want to believe Musk, and the idea is just bananas enough to be possible.

But yeah, he’s probably just screwing around.
