The best photo editing app for the iPhone⇢

While I know it’s been popular for some time, I’ve avoided VSCO Cam due to its unusual interface. Knowing that it was coming up on the site, I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying it’s power and flexibility. Even if you are a VSCO Cam user, check out Nick’s review — I bet you’ll learn something you didn’t know about the app.

Apple at CES⇢

1992 was a very different time, as Jon Turi at Engadget reminds us:

At the 1992 Winter CES, Sculley gave a keynote speech that delved into the future of digital devices. He offered a new theme for the ’90s that involved the “reorganization of work,” where technology would help us break old habits, increase productivity and redefine the workplace. The key to that shift? The personal digital assistant (PDA), a successor to his 1987 “knowledge navigator” concept that would combine applications, multimedia and network access, and, according to Sculley, lead to a trillion dollar market by the next decade. He didn’t reveal any Apple products matching the description that year, but he was setting the stage for the MessagePad, a device positioned as the next big thing.

Some Games for the Holidays⇢

With the help of Chris’ Gonzales and Herbert, Shawn Blanc has put together a great list of games for your favourite iOS devices.

These could be perfect if you’re looking for something to play whilst waiting for Santa to arrive.

A couple of my personal favourites on this list are Jetpack Joyride and Ridiculous Fishing. It’s a shame they left Peggle off the list though. That’s a strong recommendation from me.

This is a guest post by Myke Hurley.

6 Grams⇢

Many people know that I am a big pen and paper nerd, but my nerdiness for such things extends way beyond normal realms, when it comes to Field Notes.

I love these 3-1/2” wide, by 5-1/2” tall notebooks with a passion. I am a colours subscriber (recently-renewed) and a hunter of rare editions.

I keep a Field Notes Notebook on my person every day and would be lost without them.

But it’s about so much more than the book itself. There is a level of care and thought put in to each design, that is perfectly encapsulated in this video by Jim Coudal. This is why I love Field Notes.

On the 2013 Mac Pro and the Power Mac G4 Cube

Apple’s new Mac Pro looks like a stunning machine. Small and quiet, yet insanely powerful, the new computer makes every other desktop for sale today look and feel ancient. However, when I think about the new Mac Pro, I can’t help but think of one of my favorite Macs in recent history: the Power Mac G4 Cube.

This Cube happens to be mine. It’s a 450 Mhz entry-level model. The thing still boots. Introduced in 2000 as a more expensive (but less powerful) alternative to the Power Mac G4 towers on sale at the time, the Cube ultimately did not sell well and was discontinued less than two years after launch. I am not suggesting the new Mac Pro is doomed to share the Cube’s fate, but as an Apple nerd, I can’t help but be reminded of the only modern Macintosh that flopped when I see the new machine. Here are three parallels that came to mind.

Walt Mossberg looks back on two decades at the WSJ⇢

It’s hard to believe Walt Mossberg has been a voice in the industry for 22 years. In his parting piece for the paper, he reflects on 12 products that helped shape the realm of personal technology.

As announced earlier this year, Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher’s All Things D is leaving the Wall Street Journal. In turn, the WSJ is replacing the group with a “Personal Tech Reviewing Team.” While Geoffrey Fowler and Joanna Stern are certainly great technology journalists, they have big shoes to fill.
