ZDNet Reviews iOS 7⇢

Zack Whittaker:

For 30 days, I ran a pre-release version of iOS 7 (which iteratively improved when newer updates were released and installed) on my iPhone 4S. While first impressions are important — these were covered in part in the review of the user interface and experience changes — the critical check is the test of time.

The purpose of this particular review was to see how an average user’s productivity and user experience altered, if at all, over the course of a longer-term period, such as one month.

5C⇢

John Gruber:

Make no mistake: Apple’s current strategy has been remarkably successful. They sell a ton of iPhone 4S and 4 devices, and have expanded the iOS market by doing so. But there are several factors this year that suggest a change in strategy.

If Apple does unveil an iPhone 5C, I expect them to concurrently abandon the iPhones 4 and 4S. Their three pricing tiers for the next year would be a new iPhone 5S at the high end, today’s iPhone 5 in the mid-range, and the new 5C at the low end. This way, all new iPhones would sport 16:9 aspect ratio displays, and all would have Lightning adapter ports. Adios both to 3:2 displays and the grody old 30-pin port.

Blood Money

(Obviously, this post contains spoilers.)

At the end of the last first half of the season, we are left with Hank discovering a copy of Leaves of Grass, a gift to Walt, signed by Gale Boetticher while using Walter and Skyler’s bathroom. While he doesn’t say anything, the look on his face shows that it’s the most important crap Hank has ever taken.

Fast forward to tonight. Tonight, S05E09 of Breaking Bad aired.

And boy, it sure was something…

Not For Sale⇢

Christine Haughney:

In an interview published last week in The Daily Beast, Mr. Sulzberger (chairman of The New York Times Company) addressed rumors that a media mogul like Mayor Michael Bloomberg might purchase The Times at some point. “Imagine. People talk. What a shock,” Mr. Sulzberger is quoted as saying. “The Times,” he says, slapping his palm on the table, “is Not. For. Sale.”

September 10⇢

Ina Fried at All Things D:

Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone at a special event on Sept. 10, sources told AllThingsD.

The launch comes at an important time for Apple, which continues to make a lot of money from the iPhone but has seen its global market share dip amid a growing wave of lower-cost Android devices as well as an intense battle with archrival Samsung.

Tim Cook has said this fall is going be a busy one for Apple. If this is true, we have 30 days until the madness begins.

On Android, the Play Store and Nerd Rage

Yesterday, I wrote this:

The reality is that Android isn’t a hobby anymore. It’s a major player in the mobile space, and Google needs to take security far more seriously than it does.

A good first step would be reviewing apps as they are submitted to the Play Store.

I know Google won’t ever build the sort of system of rules that Apple uses to police its App Store. I’m not suggesting the company should. Google could still allow crazy-ass apps and utilities on the Store.
