LG UltraFine 5K Revived with USB-C (Updated) →

Benjamin Mayo at 9to5Mac:

Apple is now selling a new generation of the 5K LG UltraFine display. For the first time, the 5K UltraFine is now compatible with the iPad Pro, finally offering a 5K display option for 2018 iPad Pro users.

Previously, the 5K UltraFine display would only work over Thunderbolt. Now, it can output 5K over USB-C DisplayPort, which means it can now work with any of Apple’s current Mac and iPad Pro lineup.

My wife uses the UltraFine 4K with her MacBook Air, and while the enclosure is a little clumsy, the panel looks great. I’d still love to see Apple put one of these in a thinner iMac case, but this looks like the best option for those who want to use an external display with their Mac.

Update: According to a new support document from Apple, this display is limited to 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz when used on a pure USB-C system, such as the iPad Pro or the 12-inch MacBook, or when connected to a Thunderbolt 2 system, like the 2013 Mac Pro. I think it’s fair to say this is still a Thunderbolt 3 display, just with a USB-C compatibility mode now in place.
