On the future of the 3.5mm headphone jack⇢

There’s a fun rumor making the rounds this weekend, as Jeremy Horwitz reports at 9to5Mac:

Citing a reliable source, a report from Japanese blog Macotakara claims that Apple plans to remove the 3.5mm headphone port from the upcoming iPhone 7, helping to achieve a “more than 1mm” reduction in thickness compared to the iPhone 6s. While the screen shape and radius will remain similar, the device will once again become Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever, albeit with a new restriction: headphones will only be able to connect over Lightning or Bluetooth.

iPad Pro in the classroom⇢

Karan Varindani, on using an iPad Pro in college:

I can’t stress just how much the Apple Pencil increases the utility of the iPad Pro. Its precision turns the device into a true digital textbook and makes it incredibly easy to eliminate a lot of paper workflows in college. I’m typing all my comments in PDF Expert for now but as soon as the app gets updated for the Pencil I’ll start writing those out, simply for the increased memory retention of writing vs typing.

Tim Cook says no hybrid iPad-MacBook is in the works⇢

Apple’s CEO, in an interview with Independent.ie:

“We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad,” said Cook. “Because what that would wind up doing, or what we’re worried would happen, is that neither experience would be as good as the customer wants. So we want to make the best tablet in the world and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either. You’d begin to compromise in different ways.”

On the lack of a flagship iPad Pro app from Apple

I’m typing this on an iPad Pro. Without a doubt, this is the most powerful iPad yet. From a hardware perspective, it’s killer. In my time playing with a Pencil at the Apple Store, (where — annoyingly — you can’t actually buy the thing) I was impressed with the precision and feel of the input device.

24 hours into having one, however, I’m still unsure what I think about the iPad Pro as a product, but I had a thought today that has left me a little unsettled when I think about the future of the device.

Apple shuts down f.lux for iOS⇢

As you may have read, f.lux ( the great utility for making your computer screen more usable at night) shipped a version that could be sideloaded on iOS, as long as you complied the app yourself

Turns out, Apple wasn’t super hip to that:

Apple has contacted us to say that the f.lux for iOS download (previously available on this page) is in violation of the Developer Program Agreement, so this method of install is no longer available.

Yet

I’m typing this on a top-of-the-line 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. It’s beautiful, powerful and quiet. OS X and the dozens of apps I have open are running smoothly, thanks to powerful hardware and the UNIX underpinnings holding it all together.

It’s attached to a 27-inch LCD. Running out from behind the display is a white USB-to-Lightning cable. At the other end?

The iPad Pro.

It’s too early for me to have any cohesive thoughts about the device, but the situation feels weird. Federico Viticci points out why:
