Adobe Rumored to be Reworking Photoshop for Desktop, iPad ⇢

Mark Gurman and Nico Grant at Bloomberg:

Adobe Systems Inc., the maker of popular digital design programs for creatives, is planning to launch the full version of its Photoshop app for Apple Inc.’s iPad as part of a new strategy to make its products compatible across multiple devices and boost subscription sales.

The software developer is planning to unveil the new app at its annual MAX creative conference in October, according to people with knowledge of the plan. The app is slated to hit the market in 2019, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private product plans. Engineering delays could still alter that timeline.

Audio Hijack 3.5 Adds Broadcast Tools ⇢

Paul Kafasis:

Today, we’ve got a big (and free!) update to our popular audio recording utility Audio Hijack. Audio Hijack 3.5 is all about internet radio streaming, with a brand new Broadcast output block that makes it possible to send any audio to Shoutcast and Icecast servers. It’s perfect for running livecasts of podcast recordings, as well as livestreaming DJ sets, and powering all types of internet radio streams.

We’ve used Rogue Amoeba’s now-defunct Nicecast to stream shows to Relay FM’s website for years, and when they said the application was going away, I hoped that this day would come. Broadcasting is a great addition to a program that was already an indispensable part of my daily work. I would have happily paid for the ability, as those Rogue Amoeba folks are doing amazing work for us audio professionals who use the Mac.

Smile Turns 15: An Interview with Greg Scown

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Smile, makers of tools like PDFpen and TextExpander.

To mark the occasion, I spoke with co-founder Greg Scown about the company’s history, present and future.

1. Tell me a little bit about how Smile got started.

My co-founder Philip introduced himself to me at Macworld San Francisco 2003, where I was exhibiting PageSender, my faxing software. We hit it off, I had an idea for a product, he had the artistic know how, and together we produced DiscLabel, our disc labeling app. We shipped DiscLabel 1.0 at the last Macworld New York in July 2003. DiscLabel won best of show, which was very exciting. I was Smile Software. Philip was OnMyMac. Together, we became SmileOnMyMac.

Obscura 2 ⇢

iPhone camera apps are some of my favorites in the App Store, and over the years, they’ve just gotten better and better.

Obscura 2 is out now, and is my favorite Camera.app replacement. It offers full manual controls and some incredible filters, all in a beautiful, powerful user interface. If you want to improve your iPhone photo game, it’s well worth the $4.99.

Castro 3 ⇢

There’s a new version of the podcast player Castro out today, with lots of goodies.

Ryan Christoffel at MacStories has more:

If an absent feature ever kept you from sticking with Castro 2, that almost certainly won’t be a problem anymore. Castro 3 addresses nearly all of those “one missing feature” requests in a single release. Trim Silence is Castro’s take on Overcast’s Smart Speed; full chapter support is now present, as is a new Apple Watch app; the player screen has been fully redesigned; Mix to Mono improves stereo mixes that are hard to hear; and finally, there are excellent new per-podcast controls in a variety of areas. Perhaps the only thing still missing is an iPad app.

Twitter’s API Change Has a Date Again: August 16 ⇢

Sarah Perez at TechCrunch:

Twitter is giving developers more time to adjust to its API platform overhaul, which has affected some apps‘ ability to continue operating in the same fashion. The company clarified this morning, along with news of the general availability of its Account Activity API, that it will be delaying the shutdown of some of its legacy APIs by three months’ time. That is, APIs originally slated for a June 19, 2018 shutdown – including Site Streams, User Streams, and legacy Direct Message Endpoints – will now be deprecated on Wednesday, August 16, 2018.

My One Problem with Things 3

I’ve been playing with Things 3 a good bit lately. It’s a beautiful app on the Mac and iOS, and the sync engine seems to be rock-solid.

When I first played with it, I was baffled by the app’s UI for creating repeating tasks. After some time, I’ve come to see what the app is doing. There is, however, one problem I can’t overcome.

You can’t check off a repeating task early.

Pedometer++ Hits 5 Million Downloads ⇢

David Smith:

One my apps just hit a significant milestone. Pedometer++ had its 5,000,000th download. I find it mind bending to even imagine a number like that. It works out to be roughly the population of Ireland.

I’m a big fan of Pedometer++ and check in on my steps using the app on a regular basis. It’s a simple but very helpful health app, and I’m glad to see David celebrate this milestone.

Wavelength for Micro.blog ⇢

Manton Reece:

We have something really big to announce today. Micro.blog now supports hosting short-form podcasts, also known as microcasts, with a companion iPhone app called Wavelength for recording, editing, and publishing episodes.

[…] Micro.blog is about making short-form content you own as simple to post as a tweet because we believe blogging should be easier. Podcasting should be easier too.

Micro.blog can host the audio files and roll an RSS feed for listeners to subscribe to. I love this idea.
