What I love about the creative process, and this may sound naive, is this idea that one day there is no idea, and no solution, but then the next day there is an idea. Where you see the most dramatic shift is when you transition from an abstract idea to a slightly more material conversation. But when you make a 3D model, however crude, you bring form to a nebulous idea and everything changes — the entire process shifts. It galvanises and brings focus from a broad group of people. It’s a remarkable process.

More on “No Compromise”

John Gruber, on Windows 8:

There is no such thing as “no compromise”.

Agreed:

In short, Microsoft doesn’t seem willing to compromise on its vision for Windows 8. Metro is hard to use with a mouse, and Windows is hard to use on a tablet. Microsoft is compromising where it matters the most — the user experience.

Apple is willing to compromise with what features it offers on what platform, for the good of its users.

Erica Sadun, on a 7-inch iPad

There’s a lot of buzz about the pressure on Apple these days to follow up in the reader world with better markets, platforms, and tools — I’ve been writing quite a bit about that topic this month, and there’s rumors flying about what we might see announced soon. But I can’t exactly see how a 7" tablet would help Apple respond to those issues, although I know I’d certainly buy one for myself.

Chicago & Garamond

I’ve applied some new paint to the site in a few places since the fall. Headers, titles and several other items are now set in Chicago, while body copy is now set in Garamond. These two typefaces helped define the Apple experience for years, and I think they play nicely with the 512 Pixels brand.

In the coming weeks, I hope to have the responsive design finished up (thanks to my pal PJ McCormick) to make reading on an iPad or iPhone more enjoyable.

Eleven

I’ve written my “end of the year” post a couple of times now, but was unhappy with it each time.

That frustration has been a thread through my year. Don’t get me wrong, the year actually went pretty well, but I just have a hard time with a lot of things these days.

In March, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. I’m making progress in my life, and taking care of myself for the first time since Josiah was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, but I’m learning this battle is very often a few steps forward, then a few steps back.
