Revisiting My Dropbox-Powered Photo Management System

My buddy Bradley’s article on smartphones and photo management has been making the rounds this week. Here’s his premise:

If you grab a co-worker’s iPhone and they have 2500 photos on the camera roll, then you know they don’t. They’ll just keep taking photos and assume “the cloud” or whatever is backing it up. For a time, it is. That is until their backup hits the mythical 5GB mark and iCloud starts pestering them to remove data or buy more space. Some people buy more space, but most just continue to ignore it and hope Apple has their back. I hate to break it to them after their iPhone takes a swim in the lake, but they don’t. Multiple companies are stepping up and trying to solve this problem in different ways, though.

On Hackers and Depression⇢

Adrianne Jeffries:

Of course, depression can be difficult to synthesize into a math problem. The cause is usually a combination of cascading factors that are often difficult to trace. The solution can be even harder to pin down.

A fascinating read about a truly tragic phenomenon.

The Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard⇢

Marco Arment, writing about the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000:

The 4000 had two major flaws: its keys were too mushy, and its right side extended out so far that I practically had to keep my mouse in New Jersey, which isn’t great for ergonomics.

[…]

The Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard looks nice, is wireless,2 and appears to fix the size issue by splitting off the numeric keypad, but those keys have me worried: they look like cheap laptop-style scissor keys, and have a good chance of being too mushy.

Blood Money

(Obviously, this post contains spoilers.)

At the end of the last first half of the season, we are left with Hank discovering a copy of Leaves of Grass, a gift to Walt, signed by Gale Boetticher while using Walter and Skyler’s bathroom. While he doesn’t say anything, the look on his face shows that it’s the most important crap Hank has ever taken.

Fast forward to tonight. Tonight, S05E09 of Breaking Bad aired.

And boy, it sure was something…

The LEGO Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12⇢

Late last year, LEGO announced that the company would be moving forward with a Back To The Future DeLorean after fans at LEGO’s CUUSOO community went crazy for the design. 1

Last week, it went on sale in the US. Here’s mine.

The DeLorean can be configured in three different modes:

  • The original, from the first movie, complete with the “OUTATIME” license plate and lead-lined plutonium tank.
  • The flying version from the second film. In this setup, the car is equipped with its futuristic barcode license plate and Mr. Fusion reactor for powering the time circuits.
  • The somewhat-rigged version found in the third film, complete with 1950s-era Doc engineering strapped to the hood and red rims. Sadly, LEGO didn’t include whitewall tires.

After building all three, I reverted to the original, 1985 configuration, but the “Old West” version is my second-favorite of the the three.

Delight is in the Details⇢

My friend Shawn’s new project is now for sale:

This book does not include any step-by-step design guides or product development runsheets that would apply to a specific project or trade — the scope of our creative industry is so broad, encompassing print design, web design, development, music, photography, and writing to name a few. Rather, the focus is on addressing the finest goal a person in our industry can have: to create substantive work that delights and excites our audience.
