‘Enough’

My friend Patrick Rhone has written a new book, titled Enough.

Now, I haven’t read all of it, despite having a copy of for over a week. Why? Because it isn’t the kind of book you simply sit down and read. Enough is a collection of essays, and each one has spurred thought and introspection.

I don’t think I’ll finish the book for some time, and that’s precisely why I wanted to link to it. This book is about making you think, and that’s a good — and increasingly rare — thing.

TextExpander is an excellent example of a great OS X tool. If you have stuff you type more than once, TextExpander is well worth the money. You’re wasting time if you aren’t using it. It can be can be as simple or as geeky as you need.

I have all sorts of things in TextExpander, including:

  • My email addresses (including my 37 character work address)

Thanks to Smile Software for sponsoring the 512 Pixels RSS feed this week. I use TextExpander heavily throughout my day, and can’t say enough good things about it. If you don’t have it running on your Mac, you’re wasting time — its that simple.

Do you type the same things again and again? TextExpander will save you time and keystrokes.

Just assign short abbreviations to your frequently-used snippets of text and TextExpander does the work for you. You can also use one of the included snippet libraries for HTML, CSS, autocorrection, accented words and URL shorteners.

Omni Sync Server out of Beta⇢

The Omni Group:

Howdy, friend-os! Today, I get to do something we’ve been looking forward to for a while now: announce that the Omni Sync Server is coming out of beta.

We’ve had the server up for almost two years now - it launched way back in April of 2010. In that time, the server has been scaled up from a Mac mini here in our offices to a collection of machines in our colocation facility, all working together to help you move your Omni apps’ data back and forth between your OS X and iOS devices, as well as to store backup copies of that data just in case things go totally diggstown and you need them.

Adios, Analytics. Hello, Gaug.es.

A lot of nerds have been talking about their growing distrust of Google — myself included. But complaining about Google and moving away from their services are two different things. Personally, I leave Safari logged out of my account, and really only use search and Reader. (For the latter, I use Reeder, but it’s still powered by Google’s backend.)

However, Google Analytics has remained a central part of my workflow, especially when it comes to the site. While it might not be the best-designed analytics solution in the market, is the most popular, and the one most people rely on for things like advertising contracts.
