White House Honors Memphis Music⇢

Barack and Michelle Obama paid tribute to Memphis soul yesterday in the latest iteration of “In Performance at the White House,” celebrating the Tennessee city that brought blacks and whites together through music despite segregation and racism in the 1960s. “These songs get us on the dance floor,” Obama said. “They get stuck in our heads. We go back over them again and again. And they’ve played an important part in our history.”
Memphis Daily Paper Increases Rate to ‘Support Non-Profits’⇢
James Dowd at The Commercial Appeal:
Beginning Monday, the price of Monday through Saturday single copy editions of The Commercial Appeal — found in racks and at retailers — increases to $1, but the change will not affect Sunday editions or subscription rates.
As part of the increase, a portion of every non-subscription copy sold will be deposited in The Commercial Appeal Children’s Fund, a newly established program to benefit nonprofit organizations dealing with children’s and women’s issues.
Cancer Patient’s Mom Denied Entry to US⇢

Ulises Posadas, being treated for leukemia at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, rarely hears his mother’s voice.
Last week, his mother, Dolores Posadas, was captured trying to cross the U.S. border from Mexico. She was detained in a cell near Laredo, Texas, for several days, then released and returned to Mexico.
Screw our immigration laws. This is just wrong.
On the Marathon⇢

Will I come back next year? You bet, but with two other full marathons planned for 2013, maybe I should run the half instead. The St. Jude is an amazing race that I encourage every long distance runner to experience. Memphis may not be the most exciting marathon course, but the feeling you get encouraging all of those kids to grow up, and run big, more than makes up for it. It was an honor running for St. Jude, and I want to thank everyone once again for letting me experience it.
‘Far from Undefeated’⇢
My old college newspaper editor, Trey Heath:
Every day on the way to work, I get to pass by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The hospital provides some of the best care in the world to kids suffering potentially terminal diagnoses.
St. Jude does all of this, including supporting the child’s family while he or she is seeking care, for no out-of-pocket expenses. Nothing.
Although this is well documented, one thing that is not typically discussed is that St. Jude is far from undefeated.
