More on Linked Lists

I’ve thought a lot about this over the last few days.

Currently, everything on 512 Pixels would be considered a “post” on a DF-style blog. That is, that the headline goes to the permalink for the post itself, not to the linked content.

The most common criticism of this set up is that it seems like I’m double-dipping for page views. (Granted, I’ve gotten a whole two emails about this in 4 years.)

On Linked Lists

This morning, I posted a survey, asking readers what they thought about linked lists, and the lack of a true, DF-Style list here on 512 Pixels. Here are the results:

I’m in the group that likes things they way they are. I have switched the RSS sponsor links to link-style posts, and will be thinking this subject over in the coming weeks. As always, thanks for reading, no matter how I have things set up.

The 512 Podcast

I’m happy to announce a new project today: the 512 Podcast.

Produced in conjunction with 70Decibels, and co-hosted by my pal Myke Hurley, the weekly show will cover roughly the same things I do here on the site — Apple, journalism and design.

Episode 01 “Genesis” is available for download now. On it, Myke and I talked about the start 512 Pixels (RIP, Forkbombr), having a voice, goals for the show, blog comments and more.

My Interview by Ryan Cash

From the interview:

What was your first job growing up?

My first job was cutting grass for people in the neighborhood. I made enough money when I was 15 to buy a car with cash when I turned 16. I learned about being responsible, taking care of my belongings and how to be respectful to customers.

Also, I learned that if you hit a frog with an edger by accident it’s messy as hell.

Version 1.3

New as of tonight:

  • Switched to ragged-right alignment in the sidebar.
  • CSS for links and kerning on various bits of text is better.
  • Sidebar and body containers are narrower for easier reading.
  • The site is semi-responsive now.
  • The site logo and Read & Trust logo in the footer are now Retina-ready. On an iPhone 4 zoomed in, they should look as sharp as the text does.

I owe PJ the naming rights to our third child.

Version 1.2

Today’s CSS tweaks include:

  • Better-looking links.
  • Sidebar text is all black.
  • Sidebar links now match the style of links in content.
  • Word spacing corrected in navigation. (Chicago leaves enough space between words for a train to pass through.)
  • Body copy and headlines are slightly smaller.
  • More white space between posts.

The search field in the footer now uses DuckDuckGo instead of Google. Thanks to my buddy Pat for the code.

If you see any issues, let me know. The last round of changes — including a more iPhone-friendly mobile version — is still in progress, but should be done soon.

512 Pixels v1.1

Version 1.1 of the site went live yesterday. Among the bug-fixes:

  • Margins should be even on the left and right of the page when viewed on an iPad or other small screened devices.
  • Load times should be faster
  • Images in posts now are served from S3
  • The space between the sidebar and body copy is larger
  • Footer widgets align with body elements better

Major props to my buddy PJ McCormick for this work. I went to high school with PJ, and have worked on several projects with him. He’s worth checking out if you need some cutting-edge web work done.

Supporting 512 Pixels

I’m sitting in an airport, headed back to Memphis after almost a week here on the West Coast, attending Macworld, visiting friends, writing posts and recording podcasts.

As I’ve written, the trip was incredible. I think the business connections I’ve made will reap benefits for the site and all of you handsome nerd readers.

Thankfully, a wonderful British nerd made it possible to fly around the country. I couldn’t afford the trip without Matt Alexander’s generosity.

512 Pixels at Macworld | iWorld

Thanks to the unbelievable generosity of Mr. Matt Alexander, I will be flying out to Macworld | iWorld next week, as long as FedEx doesn’t goof up my package between now and Monday.

I’m looking forward to meeting fellow online writers, Apple nerds and readers. If you want to meet up, get in touch.

I don’t expect to be posting much during the trip, but I am going to try to post audio updates as I go.
