The iPad Life

Ben Brooks has started what he is calling the “iPad Life” series, which looks at how people are using their tablets day-to-day. I just love stuff like this. I am excited (and flattered) that my interview was chosen kick off the series. I assure you, there were far better choices than me to start such a series.

Thanks, Ben!

On the Comments Thing

John Gruber has addressed (once again) why his ever-popular site Daring Fireball doesn’t have comments:

What makes DF an efficient and effective soapbox is exactly that it is not noisy. My goal is for not a single wasted word to appear anywhere on any page of the site.

[…]

Comments, at least on popular websites, aren’t conversations. They’re cacophonous shouting matches. DF is a curated conversation, to be sure, but that’s the whole premise.

I’m a Junkie

I started ForkBombr when I left Apple in 2008. At the end of 2009, I posted this, saying I was putting the site on hold:

I decided to simplify in 2010. I’ve stopped checking Google Reader religiously, and am toning it down on Twitter. I’m writing for me for the first time in years, doing some research for Operation Broken Silence, working to improve Memphis with various groups and causes and — most importantly — spending more time with my family.

The State of the Blog

I started ForkBombr in September 2008. Since then, it’s seen impressive growth, averaging 3,000 page views a month, which still surprises me.

In the last 12 months, it’s been read in 105 countries.

Most hits come from readers using a Macintosh, although 17% of you are still using Internet Explorer.

The most popular articles have been the ones about Hackintoshing netbooks and using Dropbox to sync Safari history across machines. I’ve been linked to from various sources, including Ars Technica, MSNBC, Mac Surfer and more.

Support ForkBombr

All ForkBombr content is — and will remain — free. That said, I pay the bills for this thing out of my own pocket. If you like what you read here, feel free to help pitch in. I’ve added a “Support ForkBombr” link to the sidebar. Past that, I’m not going to annoy you with this. As always, thanks for reading.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Buy stuff from Amazon

I’ve set up a custom store of some stuff I like. Take a look, and if you purchase anything, I get a cut. If you don’t see anything you like, you can visit Amazon via this link and I get a cut.

ForkBombr on Twitter

Almost 60 percent of you read my content via RSS. All ForkBombr content is published in the feed, and will continue to be in the future. Today, however, I’ve added another way to follow Forkbombr: Twitter.

I’m not one of those guys who thinks social media will save the world, or that social media can fix all the world’s problems. It can’t and it won’t. However, Twitter does make life easier, so if you want to get notified when I post something new, simply follow @forkbombr. The RSS feeds this account and it updates about every 45 minutes or so if I have posted new content. I monitor the @replies on the account, so feel free to say hello.

New CSS in Place

I’ve revamped the CSS here on ForkBombr. If you read my content via RSS and never visit, come drop by and take a look.

Gone is the dark background, the type is all a little smaller and the logo now lives in the sidebar. A few other loose ends have been tied up.

If you’re using Internet Explorer 6—and I know 16% of you are—you may have some issues with the new layout. But really, it’s time to move on. Find Windows Update in your Start menu and run it. There are lots of updates just waiting for you and your computer.

Rebooting

As I previously posted, we have found out our son has brain cancer. He just underwent his first round of chemo and we’re back home now. Thank you for the kind emails, and rest assured we will continue to update on our “Josiah Updates” page.

That said, Merri advised me the other night to “give the people what they want.” So ForkBombr is back up and running.

Update on a Different Matter

Dear Readers,

I wanted to drop a quick line and let you know updating on ForkBombr is coming to a screeching halt for a while. On Friday, May 8, we found out our 6-month old son has a brain tumor. He’s at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Needless to say, I’m focused on my family alone right now - nothing else really matters right now.

I appreciate your dedication and support, and will be back soon - probably by the end of the month. Definitely by WWDC.
