Kbase Article of the Week: About the Weather App and Icons on Your iPhone and iPod touch⇢

Apple:

Learn how to use the Weather app on your iPhone to check the weather in your current location or in other cities.

With the Weather app in iOS, you can look up the weather by city name, postal or zip code, and airport code. You can also create a list of cities to track and arrange the cities in the order that you want.

The Tornado and Haze icons particularly speak to me.

Rumor: Apple to Hold March Event⇢

John Paczkowski:

Apple has settled on a date for its first big product announcement of 2019. Sources tell BuzzFeed News that the company plans to hold a special event on March 25 at the Steve Jobs Theater on its Apple Park campus. Headlining the gathering: That subscription news service that has been all over the news today. Unlikely to make an appearance: next generation AirPods, or that rumored new iPad Mini.

2018 MacBook Air Review: Getting the Band Back Together

At its “Back to the Mac” event in the fall of 2010, Apple took the wraps of the second-generation MacBook Air. In one keynote, the MacBook Air went from a too-expensive, underpowered notebook1 to the computer that would define an entire generation of laptops.

For the next five years, the MacBook Air was the clear “default” Mac notebook for the masses, and the machine that Apple’s competitors aimed to beat in terms of power and design.

Using a Mac from iOS⇢

Federico has been working on a set of tools to manage his Mac from his iPad:

This doesn’t change the fact that the iPad Pro is my main computer, and that I want to interact with macOS as little as possible. Aside from recording podcasts using Mac apps, I rely on the Mac mini as a server that performs tasks or provides media in the background. Any server requires a front-end interface to access and manage it; in my case, that meant finding apps, creating shortcuts, and setting up workflows on my iPad Pro to access, manage, and use the Mac mini from iOS without having to physically sit down in front of it.

Some iOS Apps Capturing Screen Data Without Permission (Updated)⇢

Another big security and privacy article from TechCrunch. This time, Zack Whittaker has written about several iOS apps that are secretly recording the screen without permission:

Apps like Abercrombie & Fitch, Hotels.com and Singapore Airlines also use Glassbox, a customer experience analytics firm, one of a handful of companies that allows developers to embed “session replay” technology into their apps. These session replays let app developers record the screen and play them back to see how its users interacted with the app to figure out if something didn’t work or if there was an error. Every tap, button push and keyboard entry is recorded — effectively screenshotted — and sent back to the app developers.
