In fall 2026, Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate. It was the first version of macOS to support only Apple silicon Macs, dropping the handful of Intel machines its predecessor, Tahoe, supported.

Like its more mobile operating system cousins, a headline feature of Golden Gate was a revised version of Liquid Glass. The Mac had taken the short end of the stick in 2025, and Golden Gate rights just about all the wrongs introduced in Tahoe.

Golden Gate shipped with Siri AI, Apple’s latest attempt at making the virtual assistant useful in everyday life. Powered by Gemini and fed by the user’s personal context, Siri AI was a huge improvement over what came before it.

Apple Intelligence continued to spread across the system, with features like natural language input for event creation, suggested actions in Messages, and better search in Mail making a user’s time with macOS all that more productive.

Sound Source

The 512 Pixels macOS Screenshot Library is sponsored by SoundSource, from the fine folks at Rogue Amoeba.

SoundSource puts powerful audio control of your Mac right in your menu bar. Adjust app volume instantly, apply audio effects to the audio you hear, and redirect that audio to any device connected to your Mac – now including AirPlay devices.

SoundSource: Sound control so good, it ought to be built into macOS.

Appearance: Theme Color

Screenshots for Golden Gate were made on an Indigo-colored MacBook Neo, hence the “This Mac” theme option. iMacs have a similar feature. However, you can use this free app to play with these colors on any Mac.
