Ming Chi Kuo: ARM Macs in H2 2021⇢

As reported by MacRumors:

We expect that Apple’s new products in 12-18 months will adopt processors made by 5nm process, including the new 2H20 5G iPhone, new 2H20 iPad equipped with mini LED, and new 1H21 Mac equipped with the own-design processor. We think that iPhone 5G support, iPad ’s adoption of innovative mid-size panel technology, and Mac’s first adoption of the own-design processor are all Apple’s critical product and technology strategies. Given that the processor is the core component of new products, we believe that Apple had increased 5nm-related investments after the epidemic outbreak. Further, Apple occupying more resources of related suppliers will hinder competitors’ developments.

About that ‘EU Wants Interoperable Phone Chargers’ Thing⇢

Tim Hardwick at MacRumors:

Despite pushback from Apple, the European Parliament in January voted overwhelmingly for new rules to establish a common charging standard for mobile device makers across the European Union. This article explores what form the EU laws might ultimately take and how they could affect Apple device users in Europe and elsewhere.

I found this very helpful in understanding this issue.

Apple Revises Quarterly Guidance Based on Coronavirus Concerns⇢

Apple PR:

Our quarterly guidance issued on January 28, 2020 reflected the best information available at the time as well as our best estimates about the pace of return to work following the end of the extended Chinese New Year holiday on February 10. As a result, we do not expect to meet the revenue guidance we provided for the March quarter due to two main factors.

A Fix for iPad Multitasking⇢

There’s been a lot of conversation about iPadOS’ somewhat-confusing multitasking system in recent weeks. Ryan Christoffel has put together a possible fix that makes a lot of sense to me:

My proposal for a new multitasking system employs a UI mechanic that already exists across both iPhone and iPad. Without losing any of iPadOS 13’s current functionality, it brings the iPad closer to its iPhone roots again and makes multitasking accessible for the masses.

Cairo Throw⇢

I’m thinking this would look good as a tapestry in my studio:

The original emoji, Cairo was a typeface designed by Susan Kare in 1984 for the first Macintosh operating system. Taking its name from the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt, each symbol was drawn by hand using the bitmap grid. A few notable symbols lived on into later operating systems including the cursor and watch.

Kare designed this woven blanket for the Jacquard loom, an early example of computer-controlled machinery, operated with punched cards and invented by Joseph Jacquard in 1801.

The Six Colors 2019 Apple Report Card⇢

Jason Snell:

It’s time for our annual look back on Apple’s performance during the past year, as seen through the eyes of writers, editors, developers, podcasters, and other people who spend an awful lot of time thinking about Apple.

It’s always fun to take part in this, and it is always very interesting to read. Snell had over 30,000 words worth of responses to sort through to write this. Dude is the best kind of maniac.
