Jason Snell, on the new MacBook Air⇢

I’m so happy that with 2020 MacBook Air, Apple finally has a notebook that anyone could recommend without any major caveats.

Snell has his hands on one, and his review is great. The bit about the processor is not something you want to miss:

If there’s a hint of things to come in my test results, though, it’s the performance of the iPad Pro. This isn’t the new 2020 model that’s due out next week, either—it’s the third-generation iPad Pro that was released the same day as the first Retina MacBook Air model. The 2018 iPad Pro was faster in single-core performance and 70 percent faster in multi-core performance.

WWDC Going Online for 2020⇢

Today, Apple confirmed that WWDC 2020 will not be taking place in San Jose, following similar announcements from other companies about other events, all in the wake of the COVID-19 virus.

Instead of having thousands of developers fly in from around the world, and having them interact in sessions, labs and evening events, Apple is doing what Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others have done, deciding to play it safe this year:

Vanishing Ports⇢

I can’t believe I got Jason to make this chart:

This week’s chart once again originates from a request from Stephen Hackett, who asked me to measure the number of ports on the 15-inch Apple laptop through the years. This chart covers the era of 15-inch laptops, from the original Titanium PowerBook G4 in 2001, and also includes the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019). I chose the last top-of-the-line 15-inch laptop to be released in a given year, and no, I didn’t include any bigger or smaller laptops.

The iPod is Alive and Well, To Some⇢

Melanie Ehrenkranz at OneZero:

Manuel Mantecon, who goes by Pichi, has several boxes stacked in his bathroom filled with iPod parts. When it’s time to fix one up for a customer, he takes the boxes down, including one shaped like a sewing kit that he refers to as his “iPod toolbox,” and refurbishes used iPods out of his bathroom in North Carolina. He works out of his bathroom because it’s a lot of moving parts, and he tends to leave a bit of a mess. “I know it sounds a little crazy, but it keeps everything out of sight,” Pichi said.
