Mac Power Users #555: iOS 14 Extravaganza⇢

This time on a jam-packed episode of Mac Power Users:

iOS 14 is here, bringing new features like widgets, the App Library, increased privacy and a lot more. This week, David and Stephen review the release and talk about how Apple could take some of these features farther in the future.

It’s been a long time since Apple radically changed the home screen experience on the iPhone, and I have to say, it’s been a lot of fun exploring the possibilities.

On Widget Shaming

iOS 14 and apps like Widgetsmith have unlocked a new world of iPhone home screen customization. Many of us on the nerdier side of things have been a bit surprised when seeing images like this, from 9to5Mac:

However surprised those in our community may have been, it’s clear that this is a big deal. How-to guides have not just shown up on tech blogs looking for some of that sweet SEO, but users are uploading videos and screenshots across TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter.

Apple Pushes iOS, iPadOS 14.2 Betas⇢

You may be thinking, “What happened to iOS 14.1?”

My theory is that the new iPhones will ship with iOS 14.1, and in that codebase Apple may be hiding new phone-specific goodies, and 14.2 will come along afterwards and re-unify everything.

It wouldn’t be the first time Apple’s done something like this. Here’s Jason Snell, back in 2010:

On Monday, Apple released iOS 4.2, a free software update that brings the features of iOS 4—including multitasking, fast app switching, and a unified mail inbox—to the iPad for the first time. We had a chance to use the update, which also adds the new AirPrint and AirPlay features to all compatible devices, for a few days: here’s a first look.

Apple Cash Family⇢

I had missed this, but now you can set up Apple Cash in a Family Sharing group. This is pretty cool:

You can set up Apple Cash for the children and teens in your Family Sharing group so they can make purchases, and send and receive money in Messages. You can even limit who your child can send money to, get notified when they make transactions, and lock their account.

Apple One⇢

Today, Apple announced its Services bundle, and dubbed it “Apple One.” Here are the tiers:

  • Individual includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 50GB of iCloud storage for $14.95 per month. ($6/mo savings)
  • Family includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 200GB of iCloud storage for $19.95 per month, and can be shared among up to six family members. ($8/mo savings)
  • Premier, where available, includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, and 2TB of iCloud storage for $29.95 per month, and can be shared among up to six family members. ($25/mo savings)1

iCloud space can be added separately which is nice, and includes a 30-day free trial for any services that customers do not already have. It launches “this fall,” and I’ll be moving our family over to this.

Bloomberg: September Event for Apple Watch and iPad, iPhone Coming Later⇢

Mark Gurman, writing about the event Apple announced earlier today:

The event announcement on Apple’s website doesn’t have its typical tag line that hints at what is to be announced. But the invitation to media says “Time Flies,” indicating the announcement is related to the Apple Watch, not iPhones. The new iPhones won’t launch until October, Bloomberg News has reported.

The company is preparing new high-end and low-end Apple Watches as well as a redesigned iPad Air with an edge-to-edge screen. It’s also working on a smaller HomePod and the first pair of Apple-branded over ear headphones for release as early as later this year.

This will be a virtual event, like WWDC. I think it’s safe to assume that iPhones will be at the heart of the news, but rumors about updated iPads, a new Apple Watch, over-ear headphones and more are all swirling around.
